Alumna, Evelien Schilder, Named M-Passioned Member for September 2017

Graduate Alumna, Evelien Schilder, was named the National Association for Media Literacy Education's M-Passioned Member for September 2017. Schilder completed the Media Literacy Certificate Program at Appalachian State University in 2011 and has since then been working as an instructional designer and instructor for the Instructional Technology Master’s Program at Virginia Tech. In her M-Passioned feature, Schilder discusses current research in media literacy assessment that she is conducting in collaboration with Appalachian State's Dr. Theresa Redmond. Together, Schilder and Redmond are investigating students' media literacy development by measuring the extent to which students ask critical and complex questions about media messages before and after taking a media literacy-related course. In her feature, Schilder also discusses issues related to news media and values, illuminating the history of "fake news" and how perceptions of current events and issues are impacted by message construction and framing.
